Different Types of Cancers & Types of Lymphoma

There are many different types of cancers. Most, with early diagnosis and intervention, can be treated using methods that range from non-invasive methods such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy to surgery.

Following are the different types of cancer that are treated at the Gynecologic Oncology Center:

Cervical Cancer

Once one of the most prevalent cancer types, cervical cancer today accounts for just 2.5% of all cancers diagnosed in American women today. Roughly 90% of cervical cancers start in the surface cells that line the cervix.

Vaginal Cancer

A relatively rare form of cancer, vaginal cancer cells can be found in the tissues of the vagina, which is also sometimes called the birth canal. Vaginal cancer is typically found in women 60 or older and those women born in the 1950s who were exposed to DES (which helped prevent miscarriage) while in their mother’s womb.

Ovarian Cancer

Although ovarian cancer only accounts for approximately 3% of all cancers in women, the American Cancer Society reports that still means more than 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer annually. This type of cancer usually develops in older women. In fact, two-thirds of all cases of ovarian cancer occur in women 55 or older.

Uterine / Endometrial Cancer

Uterine cancer usually occurs after menopause and there are two types: uterine and endometrial. The latter is located in the lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium. Uterine cancer is less common and can start in the connective tissue and muscle cells of the uterus.

Molar Pregnancy

The cause of pregnancy symptoms in 1 out of 1,000 women, molar pregnancy is a mass of tissue that forms an abnormal placenta in the uterus. There is no embryo, but the signs of pregnancy occur nonetheless. A small percentage of molar pregnancies can develop into invasive types of cancer.
