Molecular Pathology of Endometrial Cancer
One of the keys to finding an eventual cure of uterine cancer is to understand how normal cells become cancerous. For years it has been known that damaged or defective DNA can mutate, altering important genes that regular cell growth. It the genes are damaged, growth can go unchecked and cancer can result.
Researchers are currently looking at ways to identify damaged or defective DNA in the genes and repair them, preventing endometrial cancer from forming. Tests may also be able to predict how aggressive a cancer may be so the treatment can be configured to address the aggressiveness head on with the right dosages or responses.
Tumor Markers
Certain molecules that are released by cancer cells can help doctors detect the recurrence of some forms of cancer. CA 125 is an example. This molecule is a marker that is used to find recurrent forms of ovarian cancer. Blood tests for CA 125 may also be able to identify the presence of recurrent endometrial cancer, even before it can be seen in a CAT Scan or MRI. Tumor markers may someday allow doctors to decide which patients will benefit most from surgery versus other treatment options.
New Treatments
Researchers are also investigating a number of new drugs, drug combinations and “targeted therapies” for patients with advanced stages of endometrial cancer. The use of adjuvant chemotherapy, either with or without radiation therapy is also being studied.
Currently, the National Cancer Institute lists nearly 129 clinical trials underway for the most common form of uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, and 71 trials for uterine secoma.
